Under the influence

a performance by Franziska Aigner and Gabriel Schenker / Busy Rocks

Premiere on the 22nd of March 09 at Imagetanzfestival Brut/Vienna

We know the theater as a physical space that allows for divergent propositions to appear. We could say that the theatre space is present as a vacancy that waits to be occupied. However, if we take a closer look, this emptiness has an existence and a materiality of its own that in many cases is "as if" obliterated: the black box - a floor, a back wall, side walls or curtain wings - the light apparatus and the performers moving therein. How does this specific set-up allow, condition and influence what can be imagined, thought and done in it? What is this space and how can we, by acknowledging its specificity, expand its limits?

We propose a performance in which the presence of the performer can be perceived only through its influence over the theatre space, a performance where the body of the performer is no longer the focus of attention and where the theatre space affirms its specificity and enters into motion.
